Miniature Horse History

Miniature Horses have been selectively bred for about 400 yrs. They are "miniature" versions of larger horses . The first Miniature Horse was probably brought to the united States in the late 1800s but there was little public notice until the early 1960s. These Horses were probably derived from English and Dutch mine horses brought into the country to use in Appalachian coal mines as late as the 1950s. The Miniature Horse was also cross bred with Shetland Pony's which are in the pedigrees of most of our modern day Miniatures.

When looking at a Mini you should see a small version of a larger breed. Types such as Arabian, Draft and Quarter Horse can be readily seen . They come in a rainbow of colors and patterns to satisfy anyone's passion for the traditional or the unique. They are gentle, friendly, outgoing and their size being that of a large dog make them wonderful companions for those that only have room for smaller pets. A well socialized Mini will make a great child's pet and a wonderful companion for those not able or wanting to ride a large horse but love "equine" company. Being very versatile they can pull carts and participate in many different activities such as jumping, halter, obstacle, and other show classes. They are also the most lovely lawn ornaments! They do need a herd... one Mini Horse is not a happy Mini. Sometimes a goat , donkey or other barnyard animal can be a suitable companion but for the most part they would rather be with one of their own.
